5. Avoid buying on credit. Most people take out a loan to buy a sailboat. Do-it-yourself sailboat building allows you to spread out the cost of your boat and only buy materials when you need them. When your sailboat is finished youll own it free and clear. 6. Take pride in ownership. Imagine how youll feel when people complement your sailboat and you tell them you built it yourself. Youll enjoy additional pride in knowing that youre part of an elite group of people who have built their own sailboat. 7. Making a commitment. Sailboat building requires dedication commitment and passion.
The Internet provides a multitude of resources that will help you with your sailboat building project. Boat designs and detailed boat plans are available to download. Youll also find a wide variety of online marine supply stores that sell boat building materials equipment and tools. Whether your sailboat is a one-person sabat a daysailer or a catamaran youll feel a special sense of pride knowing that comes with sailboat building. Once youve acquired the skills to finish your boat youll be able to perform your own routine maintenance and repairs. If all this sounds good and youre ready to enjoy the boating lifestyle then its time to look into sailboat building.
There are other advantages too. Fiberglass boats usually have separate keels that are bolted in place. The bolts work in the retaining holes in the hull enlarging then slightly and after a few years you are likely to get leaks. Worse still if you press your sailboat really hard the bolts can breakand you lose the keel. This happens quite often in racing and can happen to cruising sailboats as well. The keel of a steel or aluminum boat is formed as part of the hull so it cannot come off - and the ballast of lead or steel is encapsulated inside where it cannot move. If you are looking for a 20-28 foot sailboat to cruise around rivers estuaries and a little offshore cruising then fiberglass is fine. But if you want to go further or you want your boat to be of a particular design choose aluminum or steel. Many firms offer excellent designs for metal sailboats and some offer sets of panels that you weld together - or have welded together - usually complete with instructions.
There are so many different reasons or excuses a person could come up with to charter a sailboat. These sailboat charters can be "chartered" in two different ways. You can either pay for a full charter in which you have a captain and a crew to serve your needs and desires. In this case you can still maintain your navigator job and tell the crew where to go or you can let them give you the tour on their own map. Or you could go with the do-it-your-own way and charter the boat bareboat style without the captain and crew. Youll need to know your way around the isles and how to maneuver the boat but thats not too hard with a chartered sailboat. Finding an excuse to use a sailboat charter is not hard; the hard part is choosing where to go.
