Disassembly of Sailboat Winch To disassemble remove the drum from the base of the winch using the screw at the bottom of the winch handle socket. Simply unscrew it pull the socket out and the drum will lift off. As you lift the drum be aware the winch roller bearing cages may momentarily stick inside the drum and could unexpectedly drop out. Make sure they dont bounce off the deck into the water. Now you can remove all the winch gears and bearings for cleaning. Even though the sailboat winch only goes back together one way it wont hurt to take a good look at everything.
Before you start with Servicing a Sailboat Winch Its a good idea to have everything handy before you begin because youll be too greasy to dig around your clean boat for needed items: plenty of paper towels mineral spirits small can to wash greasy parts in small paint brush winch grease tools including metric Allen wrenches and access to hot water. The paper towels let you keep sailboat winch dissassembly mess under control. Pour the mineral spirits into the small can and use to clean parts with the small paintbrush (after cleaning rinse all the parts in hot water).
If you really want to say hello you will have to be willing to shell out the money for a top-of-the-line sailboat. Keep in mind that the prices of a sailboat can range greatly based on a number of different factors. One of the most important factors in the price of the sailboat is the brand as well as the quality of the sailboat. When looking at sailboats for sale the price should be a determining factor. If you are seriously considering making a purchase you need to find the right balance of quality as well as price. These are expensive purchases so putting in the right amount of research can help you to protect yourself from making a bad purchase.
The sailboat cruiser is interested in having fun being safe and enjoying the fellowship with other boaters... in a stationary situation. It is very hard to have cocktails or enjoy conversation while the boat is moving... as it is when you are sailboat racing. Sailboat cruising versus sailboat racing is as different as day and night. I would not normally compare circumnavigation to sailboat cruising... but rather use it to illustrate a point. I had a conversation with Bill Pinckney a few months after he had become the first African-American to circumnavigate the globe alone. I asked him what was the secret to successful circumnavigation. His answer was very simplistic..." You have to stay healthy and you have to stay on board"...very similar to how to enjoy sailboat cruising. Tacking is a maneuver performed many times in the course of a sailboat race... I asked Pinckney how many times he tacked going around the world... he thought about it for a minute and replied..."Once I think". Sailboat cruising versus sailboat racing... very different one is a lifestyle... the other is a competitive sport.
