Model Ships are a scaled down replications of a full-sized historical ship from ancient times to the present. Model ships played a vital part in the building of real ships. Model ship builders would pass the completed model to the workers for them to build their ships to proper scales. In a sense the old model builders built their models for the opposite reason as model ship builders of today; they built them to create an upscale model instead. These older hand carved models that provided the model ship to their workers were actually provided the workers blueprints for the ship they were building. Today model ships and computer programs are used to help ship designers select the final form of the ships hull before they draw out the actual plans.
Until the appearance of the Vikings long boats in Northern Europe (of which several ships have been found and now are displayed in museums in Norway and Denmark) the development of marine technology can be assessed only from sparse old records frescoes seals and other visual representations. Contemporary ship models survived only from the period after the discovery of America by Columbus. Many of them were votive ships in churches which had been donated as expression of gratitude for successful travel or rescue from disaster. In the 17th century shipyards began to make accurate models before starting the actual construction of ships (the so-called Admiralty models when built for the English navy).
Turn off the builders and watch the niche market we occupy get even smaller my friends. The reason DISTRIBUTORS exist is to represent and consolidate numerous manufacturers products under one roof providing an inventory warranty and technical support system often in a different country or continent than the manufacturer. This addition to the supply chain should enable smaller retailers to improve their competitiveness. One frustration in this system with todays emphasis on internet sales is the distributor who competes with the retailers he is supposed to be supporting. This can lead to reduced supply increased prices and an unfair (to the consumer) marketplace. And while the global marketplace has allowed us all shorten the delivery cycle and to become more price conscious and price savvy it has also become a thorn in the side of the retailer particularly the small business person.
By 1920 ship model kits were available in cast lead parts. In the 1930s these became popular when \"Popular Science\" magazine published a series of articles and plans of ships. Thus ship modeling developed into a hobby. Ship models have revolutionized the world of pastimes and hobbies. Models of ancient and historic ships sailing ships cruise ships warships small vessels and tall ships are available for prices ranging from $122.99 to $15000. Crude primitives to precision-detail models of museum quality are available from dealers. People associated with ship modeling join together to form guilds for the veterans to pass on their knowledge to the greenhorns and for members of all levels to exchange new ideas. USS Constitution Model Shipwright Guild and Ship Modelers Association of California are examples of these guilds.
