After soaking take the small brush and work off any old grease from the winch component. Dont forget to clean the winch gear ring on the inside of the drum. Now that youve removed the grease and grime rinse the parts in hot water to remove the mineral spirits. If the spirits are left on it breaks down the grease. Dry the parts with a clean rag or paper towel. Reassembly of Sailboat Winch As you put the gears back into place take a close look at how the pawls are working. If they dont open and close smoothly then the drum could spin backwards. If theres any question that the pawls are not working properly it is much easier to replace them and the little springs. It is very important NOT to grease the pawls because grease causes them to stick. And if they stick the gears wont engage. To lubricate your pawls use any light oil that might be on hand; something like a 3 & 1 oil.
There are so many different reasons or excuses a person could come up with to charter a sailboat. These sailboat charters can be "chartered" in two different ways. You can either pay for a full charter in which you have a captain and a crew to serve your needs and desires. In this case you can still maintain your navigator job and tell the crew where to go or you can let them give you the tour on their own map. Or you could go with the do-it-your-own way and charter the boat bareboat style without the captain and crew. Youll need to know your way around the isles and how to maneuver the boat but thats not too hard with a chartered sailboat. Finding an excuse to use a sailboat charter is not hard; the hard part is choosing where to go.
Search for boat listings in your local classifieds whether in a paper or online. There should be direct contact information that will allow you to have a one-on-one conversation with the sailboat owner. This personalized approach to buying a sailboat will help you gather information about the sailboats maintenance record. If you get along well with the owner he might even extend a price break - owners are often attached to their sailboat and want it to end up in good hands. So when you get serious about buying a sailboat consider searching for sailboats that are for sale by the owner. You will get all the vital information from the person who knows the sailboat best - and you might even get a chance to haggle.
