The sailing ships had ferried a large number of slaves from countries in the African continent to the United States during the time of flourishing slave trade. With regard to the structure of the sailing ships every vessel has a hull rigging and a mast to hold up the sails that tap the wind to power the ship. Ballasting helps to weigh down the bottom of the ship so that the waves would not push the ship over. Convention had it that only a vessel with three or more masts was called a ship. Others were called a boat. Now the norm is ignored. The crew members who sail a ship are called sailors or hands who take turns to take the watch. In modern times the voyage of sailing ships for transportation of passengers and cargo is not desirable as this would take months. Expeditions explorations and scientific voyages or training jaunts are undertaken on sailing ships even at present. Fine models of sailing ships are on display at the prestigious American Marine Model Gallery in Salem Massachusetts. During the Great Age of Sail Salem Massachusetts was one of Americas busiest seaports and maritime centers.
An Admiralty style model could also be a cross section of the hull. This is where all the planking is in place however the model would only represent part of the ship such as the bow mid section or stern. The advantage of building an Admiralty ship model to the ship model builder is that you can add detail to better represent the purpose and era of the ship. Using the Bounty as an example representation can be made for the galley armament room carpentry shop hold captains quarters etc. The Bountys botanical mission was to pick up bread fruit plants so some plants can be added as well as an area that would have been used for the studying of plants and animals discovered along its journey. Prior to starting the ship model the builder should not only study the ship that is being represented but also the era in which the ship was built. Ship building changed from century to century.

These ships have a slower speed than most boats and their seaworthiness compared to ocean liners is lower. Overall compact a cruise model is very shapely when put on a pedestal or holder. A snowy white is the norm for these ship models and many have bottoms that are painted dark blue or some other vivid color. The colors accentuate any small detail carved into the cruise ship model.
